New Hanover County Jail Roster

The New Hanover County Jail Roster is a public transparency tool that allows anyone to check who is currently in custody at the county jail. In the state of North Carolina, the roster is maintained by the county sheriff's office and is updated throughout the workday as new detainees are booked and those who have posted bail or served their term are released. NewHanoverCourt.us helps find publicly available information about current and recent county inmates. Additionally, information can be obtained through the official sheriff's office website, in person at the jail lobby, or by calling the non-emergency line.

Search Current Inmates in New Hanover Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is currently in custody.

Online Search

  1. Go to NewHanoverCourt.us — the service allows you to search publicly available inmate information by name or booking number.
  2. On the official website of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, open the "Inmate Search" or "Jail Roster" section. The list is usually available for viewing and searching: you can enter a last name in the search field or use the browser function Ctrl+F to find the desired name in the list.
  3. If the person has been convicted and transferred to state facilities, use the NC DAC offender search, which covers state prison inmates, probationers, and parolees.

What You Need for the Search

  • The person's full legal name (last name is mandatory)
  • Booking number, if known

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster. Records about them are confidential according to state law; requests regarding juvenile records are processed separately.

By Phone

Call the non-emergency line of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. The operator can confirm if a specific person is in custody if you provide the full name and date of birth.

In Person

Visit the county jail lobby during business hours. The visitor information window usually operates daily, but visiting hours may change — it's best to confirm in advance by phone.

Find New Hanover Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detainee is officially registered in the jail. The process includes fingerprinting, photographing, recording personal data, and listing charges. Here is what is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges
  • Arresting agency (Wilmington Police, State Patrol, etc.)
  • Bail amount, if set

Most of this data is displayed in the public roster on the sheriff's office website. If you need an official copy of the record — for example, for a lawyer or employer — submit a public records request. The North Carolina judicial branch can be asked to provide a public record online, by mail, or in person. For records specifically related to custody (not court cases), the request is directed to the sheriff's office.

Statewide criminal record checks can also be conducted for free through the NC Courts criminal background check portal, using public computers at any county courthouse.

Search the New Hanover Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

By Last Name

  1. Enter the last name in the appropriate field. You can also specify the first name to narrow down the results.
  2. Check the spelling — even one mistake can result in no results.
  3. If the system supports partial matches, try entering just the first few letters of the last name.

By Booking Number

This method is the most accurate. Enter the number — and the system will show the specific record without any ambiguity.

If the Search Yields No Results

  • Ensure you are using the legal name, not a nickname or abbreviation.
  • The person may have already been released — the roster only shows those in custody at the time of the request.
  • If the arrest was recent, the record may not yet appear due to data processing delays.
  • The person may have been transferred to a state facility. In that case, check NC DAC public records.
  • Call the jail directly — the staff can clarify the status.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in New Hanover

The roster is updated throughout the workday, but it is not instantaneous. Between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the online system, it can take from a few minutes to several hours — depending on shift workload and time of day.

Main Limitations

  • Delay after arrest. Night or weekend arrests sometimes appear in the system only the next morning.
  • Disappearance after release. When an inmate is released (on bail, by court decision, or after serving a term), their record is removed from the active roster. This is not an archive.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes a name is entered incorrectly or with a different spelling — then the standard search will not find the record.
  • Transfers. If an inmate is transferred to the New Hanover Correctional Center or another state facility, they disappear from the county roster.

The roster reflects only the current custody status. To obtain historical data on past bookings, you need to submit an official records request to the sheriff's office or contact the court clerk's office for court case materials.
